Executive Coaching
Executive Coaching for Promotion
Executive coaching is provided to support managers at the time of promotion. Executive coaching for promotion sets managers up for success. Clients include:
- promoted executives in a stretch assignment
- recently hired senior team members, to align with the culture and team
- skilled executives in a rapidly growing company whose responsibilities have expanded
- experienced executives developing a new team of direct reports
Promotion coaching engagements begin with outcomes which align with the client’s motivation, the company’s situation, and leadership’s priorities and strategy. Coaching sessions are typically held every other week, with concrete goals and outcomes specified in advance. The coaching may include use of Myers-Briggs personality styles, Thomas-Kilmann conflict model, and feedback from key colleagues in the organization.
Coaching sessions are designed around goals, and use current situations as case studies for achieving the desired goals. A dilemma, a challenge, or an unexpected obstacle are all opportunities rich with leadership learning possibilities. Coaching is designed as inquiry, helping clients explore and clarify values which are most important, and expand confidence and competence. That leadership alignment with oneself becomes the reservoir of power in times of turbulence.
A Map for How to Navigate the Hidden Challenges at Every Level of Promotion
A hallmark of my promotion coaching style is to build on strengths. In fact that is how we all learn: building on a solid foundation. Even our neurology builds on strengths: new neural networks branch from existing ones. Often skilled, experienced leaders are not aware of the strengths they bring, as they may have had them so long they are automatic. Coaching brings those skills into awareness, and then enables clients to build on top of those strengths. Many times we have artificially limited options out of habit. Executive coaching for promotion offers clients an opportunity to revisit those patterns for more powerful leadership abilities.
Fostering self-awareness is another element of coaching. Noticing reactions is a source of valuable wisdom which can be overlooked in the hurry of an average day.
