Whole New Mind
Daniel Pink
Daniel Pink has written a breezy yet substantiated prediction of what will be valued in our world in the coming years. While it is more far reaching than leadership, his vision of the future can relate to businesses, careers, and a shift in our culture generally, preparing the reader for the new era. Overall it is a hopeful prediction.
In addition to his conclusions and predictions, he has a succinct presentation in each of six chapters about the “Senses” or competencies that will be needed, and these are refreshingly creative: design, story, symphony, empathy, play and meaning. In addition to describing them and indicating the treasure-within for each of these, he ends the chapters with tips on developing ones’ ability in each area, and resources for further study. He intersperses hard facts (e.g. half of all Americans over age six play computer and video games) with implications. He quotes prominent thinkers (e.g. Nobel economist Fogel: “Spiritual inequity is now as a great a problem as material inequity, perhaps even greater.”) And suggests how that may change business.
Part of the charm of the book is his self-disclosure, combined with the gift for synthesizing seemingly unrelated references into something succinct and entertaining. So it is not surprising that “Play” is one of his right brain high-concept senses for the new era. This book combines thoughtful research and assessment of big ideas, with great writing and practical tips. Highly recommended. He is also an entertaining speaker.
